Baby is one of my favorite - hold me tight and never let me go - songs. That song made my New York mornings even more priceless and cute. So when I say Ariel Pink makes my heart sing, I am not joking!
Mr. Pink is an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer based in Los Angeles, California. He was born as Ariel Marcus Rosenberg.
The guy has released numerous albums – correct number is ten -some with his band Haunted Graffiti some on his own. Pom Pom released in 2014 was his first studio album without the band. And boy did critics love him.
Guardian writes: “Suffice to say that if you’re the kind of person who thinks the one thing rock music is lacking in 2014 is people singing in self-consciously funny voices, then Pom Pom is very much the album for you.”
Adding “The genres Ariel Pink is most fond of get their stylistic mannerisms draped around genuinely fantastic music. Put Your Number in My Phone is a beautiful, tightly structured, cyclical pop song.
The gorgeous melody and lo-fi production of Lipstick harks back to the Doldrums era, sounding exactly like a forgotten but irresistible 80s hit, taped off the radio on a cassette that’s spent the intervening decades at the bottom of a box in an attic; Dayzed Inn Daydreams ends the album in a thick swirl of harmonies. The fact that Ariel Pink can write songs as good as this when he feels like it makes the second category of tracks on Pom Pom even more infuriating than they’re supposed to be. Somewhere along the way they even compared him to Frank Zappa.
Pitchfork loves him as well – the online magazine voted his 2010 single Round and Round the best of the year. As for Pom Pom they say: “But for all the arch humor and affectation, Pink writes some of most wistful and peculiarly moving songs in contemporary music. "Put Your Number in My Phone" feels like David Crosby covering 2Pac’s "What’z Ya Phone #".”
Ariel is eclectic, weird, witty…. Almost everyday is a bad hair day for him. His sound can be the most magical thing on this planet, but can also be the most annoying thing you will ever heard. Buy hey, you can easily decide on your own if you love him or hate him. I am pretty sure I love him, but just in case I am off to Zagreb, so I can double check my feelings.
